For over five years NES has supported th Engineering Development Trusts (EDT) Engineering Education Scheme (EES), at King Edward VI College in Stourbridge, West Midlands. Driven through the NES engineering department, engineers work with year 12 math and science students on real contract scenarios, with the final outcome being an Engineering report to present to the scheme coordinators, with the outstanding projects presented to a panel of industry professionals at a national event.

In 2011/2012, students and engineers worked on a project to produce an interlock system for two doors, so that when one door is open the other cannot be opened. This is to prevent radioactive waste material escaping from a containment system at Sellafield. A scale model was produced was produced showing a rack and pinion system. Another project completed was for the ProEngineer design, MathCAD analysis and working prototype of a hose and reeling drum currently used on a contract being completed by NES.

In recent years, students working with NES have won several national awards and recognition of valuable contribution certification. Students working with NES are regular visitors to the Wolverhampton head office to gain experience of…1

Tue, 01 May 2012 00:00:00 +0000NES Reach Project Milestone Five Months Ahead of Schedule

Nuclear Engineering Services (NES) has achieved a significant milestone on the Silo Emptying Plant (SEP) Mobile Caves contract for Sellafield Ltd on behalf of the NDA.

The second phase of delivery on the SEP 2 mobile cave contract has been completed five months ahead of the P50 probabilistic delivery date, a remarkable achievement for both NES and Sellafield Ltd. Scheduled for completion at the end of May, the project was handed over from the NES design and manufacturing team to commissioning personnel on the 30th March.

Phase two of the contract started in 2011 and was for the completion of the design and build on the SEP 2 mobile cave, destined for use at the Sellafield site. SEP 2 is the first of three mobile caves that will be used for the retrieval of Intermediate Level Wastes (ILW) from 22 vertical silos containing Magnox swarf and miscellaneous beta gamma wastes (MBGW). Weighing approximately 400 tonne each, and assembled from over 13,500 parts, each SEP mobile cave will remove wastes via a hydraulic grab and tooling system, through an import/export tunnel sited on top of the waste silos. Operating on a rail system,…1

Thu, 19 Apr 2012 00:00:00 +0000NES Complete Flask Leak Test Contracts

Nuclear Engineering Services (NES) has recently completed a contract for the installation of Flask Leak Test Equipment (FLTE) into the Dounreay Fast Reactor (DFR) facility for Dounreay Site Restoration Limited (DSRL). The installation of this unit signifies the end of a series of contracts for NES that has seen the installation of 19 FLTE units across 13 sites.

Equipment has been supplied to both EDF AGR and Magnox sites across the breadth of the country. Initially developed in 2004 as a prototype unit in a joint venture for both EDF (British Energy at the time of contract award) and Magnox, the FLTE is used to confirm that flasks containing spent nuclear fuel are fully sealed prior to their transportation to Sellafield for fuel reprocessing. The prototype unit, which incorporated a SCADA software system, considerably improved the overall process and time taken to test the integrity of a fuel transportation flask. The original process could take up to some eight hours to complete which NES reduced to less than four hours. A staged testing process was also introduced whereby five key stages were developed throughout the testing procedure, where in the case of a leak being…1
