As part of NES’ vision and values, the need to continuously improve performance and develop the skills of employees are identified as key drivers for the business moving forward. In 2010 NES provided its employees with the opportunity to study for vocational qualifications in Business Improvement Techniques.

Employees were enrolled on to the City & Guilds programme at the start of March 2011. The qualification is aimed at developing the skills of employees and focussing on improvements in the efficiency of the business.

Over the last twelve months employees attended a series of practical workshops as part of the qualification covering workplace organisation, continuous improvement, effective teamwork, problem solving and developing visual management systems. This was supported by a series of workplace assessments directly linked to the series of workshops and were a practical application of the skills and knowledge developed.

The course is designed to cover both theory and how employees could perform their job role more efficiently and effectively, focussing on the needs of customers both internally and externally in order to contribute to improving the performance of NES.
NES were recently visited by Sellafield Ltd Managing Director Todd Wright and Decommissioning Director Jim French.

The visitors received a presentation from members of the NES Board of Directors and project delivery team for the SEP Mobile Cave Waste Retrieval contract.

Matt Wedge, NES Project Manager, responsible for the delivery of Silo Emptying Plant (SEP) 2 commented, "The visit was the ideal opportunity to show Todd and Jim the work NES has been delivering for SL, with the tour of the works being extremely well received. We were able to demonstrate key areas of the SEP contract, giving Todd and Jim a thorough understanding of the machines. Through the presentations we were able to demonstrate the level of design innovation contained with the SEP machines through 3D ProE modelling, then the reality with the manufactured equipment on the shop floor. The full scale of the project was clearly visible when we were able to show the visitors the 25m high test rig, which is a replica of one of the 22 silos the machines will service".

The three employees who started with the company back in 1976, joined when the company was under the ownership of Clarke Chapman. I have worked all over the site throughout my time with the company but I am now back in the same office where I started 35 years' ago".

As a token of the companies appreciation, employees received a gift voucher and bottle of champagne from the company during a celebratory lunch with NES' Managing Director, Mike Hawe.
1

NES will continue to support Workington Town RLFC as the main club sponsor for the 2012 Championship 1 season, following a highly successful 2011 campaign.

In their second season supported by NES, Town fell just short in the Championship 1 play-off final at the Halliwell Jones stadium, Warrington.

Following a highly successful league campaign in which they finished third, just 6 points behind the champions Swinton, Workington reached the play-off final following a semi-final victory over Keighley Cougars. In the final Workington again came up against Keighley and were beaten 32-12 in a game watched by over 1000 Town fans.

In a game where Keighley made a blistering start leading 22-0 at half time, Town rallied with a second half come back but could not overturn the first half deficit.

Town will now look to rebuild and launch another promotion assault in 2012 and are already making significant player signings for the 2012 season backed through NES sponsorship (http://www.townrlfc.com/article.php?id=6345).
